Blood Moon Eclipse – April 15th 2013

Just last week there was an eclipse of the earth casting its shadow on the moon. Lucky for me I had the night off work so I was able to photograph it! To the naked eye it did have an orange/red glow but it didn’t come up to well in the photos so I corrected them in post. This eclipse was nicknamed Blood Moon because of the color. It was quite beautiful!

I experimented with longer exposures to make the glow more prominent. The over exposure caused a little lens flare too!

And here is a shot with a “correct” exposure and more of the red shadow showing. If you look carefully in the red section, there is a darker shadow where you can see the “rabbit in the moon” that is part of Japanese folklore.

On the 13th of January of 2013, I attended the 13th edition of the MelCosPho meet ups. It was in the Treasury Gardens, Melbourne. The weather was overcast and a little chilly for summer but the clouds made for nice photography lighting.

I went at Ayumu Aikawa (magiclad version) from Kore Wa Zombie Desu Ka? (Is This A Zombie?). My boyfriend Ethan went as Takashi from Highschool Of The Dead.

So I was a zombie and Ethan was a character that kills zombies, I thought that was funny and asked Neil to take this shot for us!

Ok now for the serious shots!

I didn’t take a whole lot of photos myself but I’m trying to aim for quality over quantity these days.  I was busy enjoying time with friends, posing for photos or assisting other photographers with their photos.

My cosplay was mostly purchased but I made the hat and painted up the chainsaw from a kids toy. The shoes are from Bodyline. I also was Ayumu to a New Years Eve party the week before, which had an “End of Days / Zombie Apolocalypse” theme, so I got good use out of it! It is most hilarious to tell people that you are cosplaying a boy while wearing a pretty pink dress!

My most favourite picture from the day, was the last one we did and was taken by Neil! It features, me as Emperor Lelouch and Ethan as Zero.
Neil also chose this shot to be in his top 10 for 2012 photos. It feels good to be a part of things like this!

Photography experiments with long shutterspeeds

I love photography and it seems to be my most common creative outlet these days. I’ve had a DSLR for 2 and a half years and have learnt quite a lot but I still feel like a beginner sometimes. Recently I’ve been doing some experiments with long shutter speeds.

Monash Freeway

The photo above was taken from a walking bridge overlooking the Monash Freeway. It was overcast and the light was beginning to fade.

This picture is taken from the balcony of my house. There was a thunderstorm and I wanted to see if I could catch any lightning. There wasn’t any fork lightning, just flashes in the clouds. But all I got in the photo was the purple sky and some strange blue lights in the top right. I didn’t achieve what I wanted but I still liked how this picture came out. I will try again to catch lightning the next time there is a storm!
