Capturing Lightning

One of my photography goals has been to capture lightning. Working out how to actually do that was like unlocking some great secret! I always thought that people had some amazing fast reflexes to press the shutter at the right time. However, it turns out you just need a tripod and a long shutterspeed. Even with this knowledge, you still need to point your camera towards the right part of the sky and be lucky enough for the lightning to happen during your exposure.

These photos were taken on 2 seperate occasions.

As I love the series Code Geass, I decided to start hosting cosplay meets specifically for getting together with others that also like Code Geass. So on the 17th of September in 2011, I held my first Code Geass Meet. There was a small group of around 10 people and we enjoyed some picnic food and taking photos. It was really great fun and I decided to keep hosting these events!

I attended MelCosPho 12 on Sunday the 30th of September at Federation Square, Melbourne.  I didn’t take many photo’s but there was still a few that I pleased with and entered them into the photo competition. Quality over quantity is my new motto! These days I am shooting in full manual mode, which makes me consider my appropriate aperture/shutterspeed choices for the kind of look I want to create. I’m using an old flash unit that was kindly given to me by Neil Creek, which adds another factor for me to consider.

I cosplayed as Luluko (Crossdressing Festival Lelouch from Code Geass). Walking through the city in a giant princess dress gets some amusing looks! Lots of people wanted to take my photo, and I am pleased with what I’ve seen so far!

Last month I went to Japan for Summer Wonderfest / work shopping trip. I’ve gone through all my photos from Wonderfest now and here they are! There were so many new figurines on display, I was quite overwhelmed.

Photography experiments with long shutterspeeds

I love photography and it seems to be my most common creative outlet these days. I’ve had a DSLR for 2 and a half years and have learnt quite a lot but I still feel like a beginner sometimes. Recently I’ve been doing some experiments with long shutter speeds.

Monash Freeway

The photo above was taken from a walking bridge overlooking the Monash Freeway. It was overcast and the light was beginning to fade.

This picture is taken from the balcony of my house. There was a thunderstorm and I wanted to see if I could catch any lightning. There wasn’t any fork lightning, just flashes in the clouds. But all I got in the photo was the purple sky and some strange blue lights in the top right. I didn’t achieve what I wanted but I still liked how this picture came out. I will try again to catch lightning the next time there is a storm!
